A shallow creek with one leaning gum tree, a lookout rock, a hollow log and a bend full of puddles, where seven friends decide every day whether to check first, go first, or just plop in.

Weather and light change; the places do not. Each one is a stage the books return to, and each one frustrates a want that nothing else can.

Home and safety; where every book starts and ends
Everyone wants to leave from here and come back to here; Bramble wants nobody to leave at all until he has checked.

Sora's spot; the meeting place; where plans are made
Sora wants a plan everyone agrees to before anyone moves, and a plan is the one thing this group cannot hold still for.
Belongs to nobody
A large fallen gum log bridging the bank edge, its dark open end leading into a cool green passage. Moss, curled bark cups, seed husks and a few smooth creek stones have collected naturally inside.
The slightly scary place; what is inside
Cinder wants to know what is inside; everyone else wants to know it is safe first, and only one of those can happen first.
Belongs to nobody
The opposite bank across stepping stones, brighter, taller grass, a little unfamiliar.
The new path; where Nix wants to be first
Nix wants to be first across; the stones only take one at a time, so being first means being alone.
Ankle-deep water weaving between tall reeds, with soft mud banks pocked by small burrow openings and scattered flat stones.
Where Skip lives; the noisy place; night scenes
Skip wants the noisy place to stay his, and the quiet friends need it too.
A dry, low shelf beneath an exposed gum root, where Cinder has carefully set a curled bark strip, three pale empty snail shells and one shiny seed pod. The small collection is sheltered but remains part of the open creek bank.
Ownership and consent: the thing somebody needs is inside somebody else's collection.
Cinder wants everyone to admire her discoveries and nobody to touch them, and she cannot have both.
Thick gum-tree roots rise from the bank in three broad dusty steps, one smooth amber gum bead caught in a crack. Morning light stripes them through the leaves.
Scale reversal: the gaps that let the small friends run through are the gaps that stop the big ones.
Nix wants to reach the top first, and the only route that gets everyone up is the one where each of them climbs differently.
A round patch of thick pale moss under low fern fronds, leaf litter deep enough to swallow footsteps, one feather standing upright in the middle. Even the creek sounds far away.
Listening: the friends have to make themselves understood without the loudest of them talking.
Hush wants one minute where nobody needs him to answer, and Skip has something bubbling up that will not wait a minute.
A smooth clay dip between the reeds: a tiny lake an hour after rain, a cracked shiny mud bowl by lunch. One red gum leaf floats in it when it is full. The bowl never moves; only its water does.
Time pressure without danger: a short-lived chance that everyone wants for something different.
Skip wants to splash in the biggest water he has ever seen, and it is the only hour anyone else can use it either.
Belongs to nobody
A wide glassy strip of dark creek mud beside the bend, so smooth it keeps every paw print and fin trail all day. A pale driftwood branch lies along one side like an edge everybody agreed to.
A boundary with a reason: the rule holds when nobody is watching, or the thing it protects is gone.
Cinder wants a closer look at the strange tracks, and stepping closer is what erases them.
A small, badly woven pad of reeds and thin fallen twigs lies over a soft muddy patch. Its own split reed fibres loop around the edges, one corner always curls up, and a naturally red-orange reed blade is braided through the middle. It is only a few paw-lengths long.
A shared thing built badly: it fails because each of them built their own end of it.
Skip wants everyone to cross at once, and the walk only holds steady when they go one at a time.
A flat sandstone slab near the bank, ringed by smooth creek pebbles and shaded at noon by the leaning gum tree. A hollow in the middle holds one round yellow leaf like a tiny plate.
Sharing and invitation: gathering food or found things turns into who gets included.
Bramble wants everyone gathered neatly around it, and a real shared meal means letting each friend join their own way.
Where the leaning gum tree splits, two thick branches make a wide Y, a smooth worn saddle of bark high enough to see the whole bank but only a short hop up from it. Seen from branch height, with pale leaves and open sky behind and the creek small below. A few dry leaves have caught in the crook.
Hiding that turns into asking: a private place somebody else is allowed to sit near.
Hush wants to disappear completely and wants somebody close enough to hear him whisper.
The creek slips over a low shelf of honey-coloured stone, no higher than Bramble's paw, into a clear ankle-deep pool, with bubbles gathering around one trapped pebble.
The same small obstacle read three ways: thrilling, annoying, or far too loud.
Nix wants the first jump through the falling water, and Hush needs to know exactly where every splash will land.

Cinder opens the hollow log's box mid-check and lets out the thing Bramble was checking for.
Sora calls danger; Nix is already past it and finds it was only leaves.
Only close-look plus far-look together can find what the group lost.
Two worriers agree on everything until they have to decide who was wrong.
Nix arrives first with nothing; Cinder arrives last with everything opened.
Bramble sweeps everyone close with his rope. The hug Tuck wants finally happens and everyone yelps, so they invent the belly-up hug.
Nix launches through the dark reeds; Hush freezes as a branch with huge open eyes and Nix lands on him.
Sora needs silence to see what is coming; Skip keeps popping up with plop in every gap.
The one who is too close and the one who hides learn the middle distance together in the dark.
